About This Project

This gem of a location is in the heart of the National Forest in Leicestershire. It’s a 19th Century iron-making blast furnace on the banks of the Ashby Canal and is an excellent destination for anyone interested in history, or just simply wanting a nice walk along the river towards Conkers – the National Forest family attraction just a mile away.

The Furnace fell into disrepair and was derelict by the 1970’s and was affected by mining subsidence in the area. The site was purchased by NW Leicestershire District Council in 1981 and the hard work done by them and the Moira Furnace Museum Trust is evident to all in the sensitive restoration of this fascinating place.

Hornbeck were very pleased to work with the Council on signage, and we were able to match it with the National Forest signage family which we also produce. High quality materials including solid oak, Corten (weathering steel) and pin-sharp 10-year anti-face HardRok panels combined to produce entrance signage, fingerposts, lecterns and even bollards and a gate! We look forward to visiting Moira Furnace again to see the signage welcoming visitors from near and far.
