Signage & wayfinding for Wilder Blean, Kent

In a quiet corner of Kent some residents are returning to the woodland after more than a thousand years absence – the bison. Standing up to 7ft high at the shoulder they are the heaviest living wild animals in Europe but apparently quite gentle! They are considered expert ecosystem engineers and should promote biodiversity through their activities.

In addition to this Longhorn cattle, Exmoor ponies and Iron-Age pigs will join them to help create a lush and thriving woodland system – naturally. This has been a huge visionary project run expertly by Kent Wildlife Trust while navigating many hurdles along the way.

Landmark tendered for this project and were delighted to be successful, and it was a privilege to work with the dedicated KWT staff to create a memorable stand-out destination. The key feature of this signage is the combination of wany-edge timber, with dramatic engravings of the new residents and the pin-sharp graphics of the HardRok panels.

Display signs, monoliths, fingerposts, waymarker posts, listening posts, cycle stands and a sign shelter have all been used, along with sturdy benches to enjoy the peace and quiet of this forest haven.

Every detail of the signage was pored over by our design studio to ensure that it should ‘blend in while standing out’ – a knack that only comes with long experience of graphics, materials, structures and orientations.
