Why do a Lighting Plan?

There are many reasons why a lighting plan is essential for a successful outcome on any project, here are some of them:

Often a requirement for progressing to RIBA Stage 4 and beyond.
It will take into account the Lighting Zone and select appropriate lighting levels.
Can combine a lighting impact assessment to include light pollution, wildlife disturbance mitigation, impact of artificial lighting on the environment.
It ensures that the lighting levels are correct for the location, balancing the apparently conflicting requirements for human safety and wildlife enhancement.
The chosen materials can complement the location either by blending into the background or standing out as an architectural feature.
It will enable the total energy consumption to be calculated to ensure the scheme is environmentally and financially sustainable.

What will a lighting plan show?

They can be configured in different way according to the requirements but these are the essentials:

Plan showing the layout of the area to be illuminated including the immediate surroundings which could also be affected.
Lighting product to be specified including manufacturer details.
Lighting temperature (usually 2000k – 4000k in landscape lighting)
Lumen output (amount of light emitted)
Lux levels (amount of light hitting the ground/surfaces)
Location of cabling, feeder pillars, etc.
Isolines (coloured bands showing the spread of light)
Lighting zone and notes.

We can also include coloured visuals to give a true indication of the lighting levels after dark.

Priors Hall Park is a beautiful new neighbourhood near Coby in Northamptonshire. With excellent rail, road and air connections combined with the landscaped open spaces it will eventually contain over 5300 homes. Urban & Civic are the master developer and there are at least six developers working here to ensure a characterful and unique community that will develop over the years. These include well-known names such as Bovis Homes, Taylor Wimpey and David Wilson alongside others.

Lighting, furniture & signage for Priors Hall Park, Northamptonshire

Hothorpe Hall is aptly described as a grand Georgian country manor house. It has to be the perfect destination for special occasions being centrally located and having either the beautiful house for the venue or a stunning woodland setting. We were delighted to provide timber lighting bollards for this very special place and Keystone Construction did a very high class installation. We could say more but really the photographs speak for themselves.

Priors Hall Park, Northamptonshire

Priors Hall Park is a growing community in Northamptonshire, set to house over 5,300 homes. Urban & Civic, alongside major developers, are shaping the neighbourhood with a focus on functionality and design.

We contributed to this development by supplying an outdoor lighting plan that balances aesthetics with safety. The lighting solutions used in this project enhance pathways and communal spaces, ensuring visibility while preserving the natural surroundings

Hothorpe Hall, Leicestershire

Hothorpe Hall, a grand Georgian country manor, required elegant and efficient lighting for its venue and woodland spaces. We provided bollards, which offer subtle yet effective landscape lighting for outdoor spaces. These FSC-certified bollards feature LED modules with a 100,000-hour lifespan, ensuring long-term sustainability while complementing the natural setting. Keystone Construction handled the high-quality installation, resulting in a visually cohesive and functional lighting design.

Both projects utilised the Eye bollard, known for its minimalist design and durable timber construction. The Priors Hall Park project additionally incorporated Strato lamp posts for enhanced roadway and pathway lighting.

These projects demonstrate how a well-executed outdoor lighting plan can enhance urban and rural environments, providing functional yet aesthetically pleasing landscape lighting for outdoor spaces.
