Interpretation Boards

What is Interpretation Design?

Interpretation boards are a common feature at visitor attractions, nature reserves, and wildlife areas. They provide information and context about the surrounding environment and the natural history of the area. They are often found at trailheads, along hiking trails, and at points of interest, and are designed to educate and engage visitors about the natural world!

Interpretation panels can take many forms, including printed materials, interactive displays, or audio recordings, and are often accompanied by illustrations or photographs to help visitors visualise and understand the content. They are an important tool for helping visitors learn about and appreciate the natural environment, and can enhance the overall visitor experience at these types of locations.

Clear and engaging interpretation sign

Well-designed and easy-to-understand interpretation signs can go a long way in making your visitors feel more comfortable in their surroundings, and it can create a great user experience for them, enabling them to make the most of their visit. This can increase the likelihood of them returning and can also be a boon for your on-site staff, as they have to spend less time directing and informing visitors.

Diverse interpretation boards for every visitor

We can create numerous styles of interpretation boards, from hand-painted illustrations to modern stripped-back styles and everything in between. Careful consideration of visitor interests ensures that the appropriate style is chosen for maximum impact, year round.

Notice Sign Landmark

Whittlesey Heritage Walk, Cambridgeshire

Whittlesey, a charming market town in the Fenland area of Cambridgeshire, recently introduced a Heritage Walk to highlight its rich history. The walk spans two routes covering over 4km and features key landmarks and historical insights. To support this initiative, we supplied interpretation boards and wayfinding signage, ensuring visitors could easily navigate and engage with the town’s heritage.

We provided Cardiff lecterns with HardRok trays, known for their 10-year anti-fade warranty, along with post-mounted and railing-mounted signs. Our team managed the full process, from signage fabrication to installation, conducting CAT scanning to ensure safe placement. This comprehensive approach resulted in a durable and visually appealing signage system that enhances the visitor experience.

Kidlington Walking Trails, Oxfordshire

Commissioned by Cherwell District Council, we designed and installed signage for five zoo-themed walking trails in Kidlington, Oxfordshire. The trails, ranging from 1.7km to 5km, were created to encourage families to explore their surroundings on foot, promoting physical activity and sustainability.

To complement the town’s rural aesthetic, we used oak interpretation panels paired with aluminium elements to maintain accessibility and visibility. The Lymington lectern and Perth fingerpost signs ensured clear wayfinding, blending seamlessly with the natural and built environment. This project exemplifies how well-designed interpretation boards can foster a sense of connection between people and their surroundings while enhancing safety and usability.
