A closer look at Sleaford’s latest wayfinding upgrade

Nestled in the heart of Lincolnshire, Sleaford is an elegant market town known for its Georgian architecture, riverside walks, and strong sense of local character. Over recent years, the town has been on a steady journey to refine its identity and improve the way people move through it, a prime example of what streetscape planning is done well.

We’re proud to have delivered the second phase of Sleaford’s wayfinding scheme, which continues this transformation with precision, quality, and attention to place. Through carefully considered design and installation, the latest phase builds on the success of the first, reinforcing Sleaford’s welcoming, legible and cohesive town centre experience.

Revitalising Sleaford’s streetscape

This phase of improvements was driven by a shared vision: to enhance navigation while celebrating Sleaford’s heritage and charm. Our goal was to create a streetscape that feels both intuitive and inviting, a system that blends effortlessly with the town’s existing aesthetic while improving how residents and visitors connect with it.

Every installation has been positioned with purpose. The new signs provide clear direction for pedestrians and visitors, while the materials and finishes reflect the timeless qualities of this historic setting. This balance between heritage and modern functionality is at the core of good streetscape in urban design, and in Sleaford, it’s come to life beautifully.

The new additions

The second phase introduced a number of new wayfinding elements designed to make navigation easier and more engaging across the town. These include:

• Post-mounted orientation signs – providing detailed mapping and destination information.
• Fingerpost signs – offering intuitive, at-a-glance direction for pedestrians.
• Narrow monoliths – visually striking focal points for key routes and spaces.
• Ginnel plaques – unique brass plaques set into the pavement to identify local “ginnels,” the Lincolnshire term for narrow alleys between buildings, giving subtle recognition to the town’s vernacular charm.

Together, these additions form a cohesive, legible system that supports intuitive movement while enhancing Sleaford’s sense of place.

The products behind the project

Barcelona – monolith

The Barcelona monolith is a signature feature of this phase. Its combination of steel framing and toughened, low-iron glass brings strength and clarity to the public realm. The digitally printed graphics are crisp and enduring, and optional beacons or illumination add visual prominence. Built with versatility in mind, the Barcelona can be surface-mounted or supplied with a foundation unit for a clean finish, ideal for spaces that transform for events.

Stockholm – orientation sign

Blending tradition with modern precision, the Stockholm range provides a post-mounted system that’s both functional and refined. Constructed entirely from aluminium for longevity, it can be configured as a display sign or combined with a notice case to share community information. Its sleek lines complement Sleaford’s varied architecture, giving a unified feel across the town centre.

Venice – fingerpost sign

The Venice fingerpost adds elegance to practicality. Its 100 x 100mm post accommodates up to eight directional arms, each mounted at 45° angles with concealed locking and alignment systems for durability and visual consistency. With flexible design and finish options, the Venice system fits naturally into both contemporary and heritage environments, making it ideal for Sleaford’s evolving townscape.

This combination, the Barcelona monolith, Stockholm orientation sign, and Venice fingerpost, has been proven in numerous UK town centres. Its adaptability allows it to serve both modern and historic settings equally well, ensuring that the result feels tailored, timeless, and cohesive.

The impact

The transformation is already visible across Sleaford. The new installations have elevated both the visual and functional quality of its public spaces, reinforcing local identity and helping visitors navigate with ease.
