For a school with a long history and wide spaces, clear and consistent wayfinding is essential. When Chigwell School approached us, the task was to deliver a system that guided pupils, parents, staff, and visitors seamlessly across the grounds. The solution needed to be functional, timeless in style, and aligned with the school’s visual identity. This project highlights how wayfinding for schools can achieve both practical and aesthetic goals in an educational setting.

Chigwell School, founded in 1619, is a private boarding and day school located in the Epping district of Essex. Spread across more than 100 acres, it combines a rich heritage with a modern outlook, offering a diverse and vibrant environment for its pupils. Over the centuries, its alumni have gone on to make their mark around the world, reinforcing its reputation as a place of academic excellence and forward thinking.
The Chigwell School project required careful consideration because:
We worked closely with Chigwell School to design a system that integrated its branding in a way that was both distinctive and understated. The philosophy was to create something classic yet contemporary, complementing the historic school while reflecting its progressive outlook. Just as importantly, the system was designed to be adaptable—future-proofed to evolve with the school as its needs change over the years.

A full suite of signage was introduced across the school. Entrance signs create a strong first impression, while fingerposts guide visitors with clarity. Monoliths provide presence and permanence, and a digital totem at the main vehicle entrance ensures real-time information is always available. Collectively, these elements work together to deliver consistency and ease of navigation across the site.
The finished scheme delivers an understated sense of competence and excellence. The signage not only improves navigation across the extensive grounds but also enhances the visitor experience, reinforcing Chigwell’s brand at every touchpoint. By combining tradition with modern technology, the system will serve the school reliably for years to come.

Chigwell School’s project illustrates how thoughtful wayfinding contributes to both function and identity. A carefully considered approach ensures signage does more than guide—it reflects the values and stature of the organisation it represents. For institutions looking to blend heritage with modern demands, this project demonstrates how effective wayfinding for schools can create a lasting impact.
