Shaping better experiences in York with a furniture upgrade

York is a city celebrated for its rich history, unique character, and strong sense of community. Within it, Acomb stands out as a lively suburb with an identity all of its own. At its centre is Front Street, a secondary shopping area that has long served as a hub for local people. 

In recent years, this area has benefited from much-needed regeneration designed to make it more attractive, practical and enjoyable. Through the thoughtful integration of high-quality urban street furniture, we were proud to play our part in shaping better experiences for residents, visitors and shoppers alike.

Acomb Front Street: A brief history and its role today

Acomb has roots stretching back to Roman and medieval times, with its name thought to mean “at the oaks.” Today, it is one of York’s largest suburbs and an important retail and community hub. Front Street has always been central to this role, offering everyday services and independent shops. 

Like many high streets across the UK, it has faced challenges in recent years, with reduced footfall and competition from out-of-town shopping. City of York Council recognised the need to reinvest in Acomb and set out a regeneration plan to reinvigorate the area (Source: City of York Council). This was not just about paving and highways but about creating a welcoming place where people want to spend time, a goal where the right street furniture plays a defining role.

The role of urban street furniture in regeneration

For Front Street in York, these principles were at the heart of the regeneration project. The focus was on practical improvements that also lifted the overall atmosphere, creating a place that feels more connected, attractive and enjoyable.

Our contribution to Front Street’s transformation

Our work on Acomb Front Street was guided by two clear principles: reducing street clutter and creating cohesion. The regeneration was never about simply adding more elements, but about selecting pieces that complemented one another and enhanced the space for everyone who uses it. 

Products integrated into the scheme

Barcelona monolith

A seasoned presence on many high streets, the Barcelona monolith brings clarity and identity. With its striking steel frame and distinctive cutout details, it provides a focal point for information while reinforcing the sense of place. The ability to customise its size, finish and detailing means it can be adapted to suit any streetscape, including Front Street.

Mettro 103 bench

The Mettro 103 curved bench adds flow and flexibility to any outdoor environment. Designed to work seamlessly alongside the Mettro 104, it enables creative seating configurations, from gentle curves along a walkway to circular arrangements around a focal feature. Its adaptable form encourages designers to think beyond straight lines, helping shape inclusive, engaging spaces that invite people to pause and connect. 

Mettro 440 planter

Greenery has a transformative effect on urban settings. The Mettro 440 planter introduces natural elements into Front Street, balancing contemporary design with warmth. Large enough to hold a variety of plants and shrubs, these planters bring softness to the street scene and help create a calmer, more inviting atmosphere.

Stockholm notice case

No community space is complete without a practical way to share information. The Stockholm notice case combines clean lines with functionality, giving residents and organisations a durable platform for notices and updates. Its all-aluminium construction ensures a long-lasting, rust-free finish, while its contemporary form ties neatly into the wider scheme.

Shaping better experiences: The impact

The positive impact of this regeneration is already clear. Front Street now feels less cluttered, more cohesive and welcoming. Shoppers can pause and rest, greenery softens the pavements, and clear signage supports wayfinding and communication.
