Spalding, a well-known market town in Lincolnshire, has long been celebrated for its riverside charm and cultural heritage. From its rich trading history to the renowned Spalding Flower Parade, the town has always been a place with a strong sense of identity. But as with many historic centres, the existing signage had fallen behind, inconsistent, outdated, and unable to reflect the town’s evolving character.
Recognising this, South Holland District Council commissioned a new approach to unify Spalding’s visual landscape, and we were delighted to lead the project. Our mission: to create contemporary, coherent signage wayfinding systems that celebrate Spalding’s heritage and enhance the visitor experience.

Wayfinding is about more than just navigation. It’s the art and science of helping people understand where they are and how to get to where they want to be, while feeling connected to the environment around them. For heritage towns like Spalding, well-designed signage wayfinding systems play an even more vital role, helping visitors navigate intuitively while reinforcing local identity. The goal is always twofold: clarity and character.
Before the project began, Spalding’s existing wayfinding was patchy and inconsistent, a mix of styles and messages accumulated over time. The Council’s goal was to bring cohesion, a system that could promote the image of Spalding, highlight its many historic buildings and features, and strengthen its sense of place.
Achieving this required collaboration across multiple local organisations and stakeholders, all coordinated by the South Holland District Council team, whose dedication ensured that every voice within the community was heard.
Following a competitive tender process, we were thrilled to be awarded the project to develop the town’s new wayfinding strategy. Drawing on our experience in nearby Sleaford, we carried out extensive research into Spalding’s layout, movement patterns, and architectural context.
The result was a comprehensive Design Specification Pack (DSP), incorporating a new brand, a detailed toolkit, and a basemap designed to bring clarity and cohesion to every element of the wayfinding system. Our visual approach was carefully aligned with Spalding’s historic architecture and riverside charm, a balance of tradition and modernity that would feel natural against the town’s backdrop.
Our involvement didn’t end with the strategy, as we were delighted to continue through to implementation. This phase brought the vision to life, with the creation of a distinctive family of signage that both informed and inspired. The design process was highly collaborative, with the Council providing valuable insights to ensure the interpretation of content was engaging without overpowering the navigational purpose.
The final scheme stands out for its deep, dark red tone, a colour that catches the eye yet harmonises beautifully with Spalding’s architectural character. Each sign was carefully positioned to enhance visibility while preserving the town’s aesthetic balance. The result is a system that feels deeply rooted in place, functional and respectful of its surroundings.
At the heart of Spalding’s new signage scheme is the Lisbon Monolith, a proven structure combining strength, versatility, and design elegance. Made from two digitally printed trays fitted over a durable aluminium frame, the Lisbon delivers a clean, uncluttered look that suits both modern and historic environments.
Its adaptability makes it ideal for projects like Spalding, where each location demands a tailored approach. The Lisbon can be built to virtually any width and height, surface-mounted, or installed with a foundation unit to maintain a seamless surface, perfect for public areas that host seasonal events or markets.

Today, Spalding’s new wayfinding system brings a renewed sense of order and identity to the town centre. The signage blends effortlessly with its architectural surroundings, helping visitors and residents alike navigate with confidence while discovering the town’s heritage and points of interest.
By integrating local character into every element, from the colour palette to the typography, the scheme enhances Spalding’s appeal as both a destination and a community. It’s a proud reflection of what can be achieved when thoughtful design meets local collaboration.
The signage wayfinding systems we developed for Spalding are more than a network of signs; they’re a celebration of place, history, and community. Through careful planning, collaborative design, and a shared commitment to quality, we’ve helped create a framework that supports navigation, reinforces identity, and invites exploration.

Projects like this remind us why purposeful, design-led wayfinding is so important for heritage towns: it doesn’t just help people find their way, it helps them connect with where they are.
