Colour shapes how people experience a space long before they interact with it. It guides movement, signals intent, reinforces identity and creates emotional connection. Yet colour is not universal. The way it is defined, specified and reproduced depends entirely on where it will live, from digital screens to printed materials to the built environment itself.

Understanding each colour system, and the difference between RGB, CMYK, Pantone and RAL, is essential for maintaining clarity and consistency as designs move from concept through to delivery.

What are colour schemes and why do they matter?

Colour schemes provide a structured way to define and communicate colour across different applications. Without them, colour intent can quickly become inconsistent as projects move between teams, materials and environments.

They play a critical role in ensuring that what is designed is accurately realised.

RGB: colour in the digital world

RGB stands for Red, Green and Blue, the three colours of light used to create everything seen on screens. Phones, tablets, laptops and digital displays all rely on RGB to render colour.

It is an additive model, meaning colour is created by adding light together. At full intensity, red, green and blue combine to produce white. This allows for vibrant, luminous colours and a wide range of visual expression.

However, RGB exists only in light. It is not tied to physical materials, inks or finishes. When applied beyond the screen, it must be translated into another scheme, often introducing variation if not carefully managed.

CMYK: the standard for print

CMYK stands for Cyan, Magenta, Yellow and Key (Black) and is the standard colour scheme for print. Unlike RGB, CMYK colours are subtractive. Inks absorb light rather than emit it, meaning colours become darker as more ink is applied.

Printed materials rely on CMYK to deliver consistent and repeatable results across a wide range of outputs.

Where CMYK is used:

  • Posters and marketing materials
  • Maps and printed signage

CMYK has a narrower colour range than RGB. Bright digital tones, particularly vivid greens, blues and oranges, often appear more muted in print. This is not a limitation to overcome, but a characteristic to design with.

Pantone: precision and brand consistency

Pantone is a standardised colour matching scheme designed to deliver precise and consistent colour across print and manufacturing. Pantone colours, often referred to as spot colours, are pre-mixed to exact formulas rather than created through a combination of inks during printing.

Each colour is assigned a unique reference number, providing a shared language between designers, manufacturers and suppliers. This makes Pantone particularly valuable where colour accuracy is critical, especially for logos and brand-critical elements.

While Pantone colours can be translated into CMYK or RGB equivalents, these are approximations. When colour integrity must be maintained across multiple applications, Pantone provides clarity and control.

RAL: colour for physical spaces

What is ral colour system? RAL is a physical colour standard used for paints, coatings and powder-coated finishes. Unlike digital or print-based schemes, RAL colours are defined by tangible samples, allowing for consistent reproduction across materials and manufacturers.
