When you’re designing an outdoor space, lighting matters more than you might think. At Hornbeck, we specialise in outdoor lighting and street furniture that does more than just look good—it works hard too. We create products that bring function, safety, and style to every landscape.
One of our recent projects took us to a truly special place, the American Museum near Bath. This historic site needed a lighting solution that respected its heritage while improving visibility for visitors.
That’s where our bollard pathway lights came in. We installed our popular Eye bollards to gently light the museum’s paths. These lights blend into the landscape by day and brighten the way by night—exactly what’s needed in a space where beauty and purpose go hand in hand.
Tucked away in the hills just outside Bath, the American Museum is one of a kind. It’s the only museum outside the United States that’s fully dedicated to American decorative arts. From the moment you step onto the grounds, you can feel the blend of history, culture, and careful curation that makes this place so special.
The museum sits within a stunning Grade I-listed house, surrounded by 125 acres of formal gardens, woodlands, and themed outdoor spaces. Every part of the site—from the Mount Vernon Garden to the Children’s Garden—has been designed with care and character.
With so much heritage and natural beauty to preserve, adding any new element requires thought and precision. The outdoor lighting needed to support the experience without distracting from it. That’s why our approach focused on subtlety, simplicity, and respect for the surroundings.
The Eye (Wired) bollard stands out for its clean lines and quiet confidence. It’s simple, modern, and made to sit comfortably in any outdoor space without stealing attention. This design works with the environment, not against it. During the day, the Eye bollards blend into the landscape thanks to their understated timber finish. At night, they come to life, casting a gentle, downward light that guides visitors along the paths without overwhelming the surroundings.
These bollards do more than light the way. They enhance safety for evening visitors and create a calm, welcoming mood after dark. All of this happens without disturbing the natural charm or historical value of the site.
The Eye bollard is available in a range of responsibly sourced timbers, including Larch, Oak, Chestnut, and Accoya. Each material offers its own strengths—whether it’s durability, grain character, or environmental performance.
For the American Museum project, we chose timber that complements the natural surroundings and supports long-term performance. Over time, the timber weathers beautifully, from a fresh golden tone to a soft silver-grey. This natural ageing process helps the bollards settle gently into the landscape, becoming part of the scenery rather than standing apart from it.
The Eye bollard combines clean design with reliable performance. Here’s a quick look at what it offers:
